Dietary modification is an important and proven aspect of CKD treatment. The following are prioritized nutritional goals for cats diagnosed with early CKD: Promote and increase water intake, transitioning to all or part canned food if necessary. Make diet changes gradually to increase acceptance. Meet individual calorie needs to maintain healthy, stable weight.

Cats with chronic kidney disease can benefit from a kidney diet that is slightly lower in protein and phosphorus. However, often cats with advanced kidney disease have a poor appetite and feel nauseous, and in those cases, your vet may recommend feeding them whatever they will tolerate.
