How to monitor internet connection for interruptions - for Mac OS X
Oct 27, 2010 · This Chrome extension Internet Connection Monitor helped me to solve the same problem. It shows a green checkmark above the browser when online and a red cross when offline. It also keeps a connection log. Even better would be to have this in the Mac menu bar, but so far I haven't found anything like that.

Jan 22, 2019 · Activity Monitor of Mac OSX only shows received bytes and send bytes of each process. Command "nettop" and "nethogs" in Terminal can only show the bandwidth of each connection. I want to know the bandwidth consumption in kb/s. Any tool recommendation is appreciated. GUI or command line tool, free or Proprietary application are all OK for me.

I know from a bit of monitoring software that the connection is being fairly heavily used which would explain it but I don't know what's using it.

I like it because it is a no-frills app and uses very less space on the menu bar and it also shows status of Thunderbolt network adaptors, so works with my Mac Book Air. Sadly it is not free.

Mac OS X Lion (10.7.x) contains a command called nettop that gets you most of the way there. Be sure to check the man page to learn the navigation keys and note the d key for toggling delta display. Not quite the kB/s display you were looking for, but close perhaps.
