To do so, bring your purple heart indoors before the first frost. Place it in the sunniest spot in your home, since it prefers full sunlight. Consider using a grow light if needed. Water once the soil completely dries out, and prune the vines if they get leggy. Purple heart can be placed outside again once your local last frost date has passed.

To care for Purple Heart plants use light well-draining soil using peat moss, perlite, and compost. Provide lots of bright indirect sunlight. Keep the temperature between 46-79 °F (18-26°C). Humidity between 40-50% is optimal. Water when the top 1-inch (1.5cm) of soil is dry about once a week.

Purple Heart Plant (Tradescantia pallida) does best under bright, indirect light, average warmth away from drafts and moderately moist, fertile, free-draining soil coupled with fortnightly feeding during the growing season. Tradescantia pallida needs repotting only when extremely pot-bound as it grows best when slightly root-bound.

When growing them as houseplants, you should fertilize your purple hearts with a general-purpose liquid houseplant fertilizer twice a month from spring through fall, then just once a month during the winter. Prune often. Cut plants back after they’re finished flowering to encourage new growth.

When grown indoors, in containers, it should be watered moderately during the warm season and sparingly in winter. When planted in a container it grows best in loam-based compost and it is advisable to use liquid fertilizer monthly in its growing season.
