In this post, we are going to talk about different types and styles of hand lettering. It is safe to say that there are many different hand lettering styles you can create, and that basically means that your own creativity is the only limit.

These styles are all fairly straightforward, and if you know how to do faux-calligraphy (again, see here if you don’t) you can do any of these! Some are basic, like the monoline, and some you’ll need to thicken the downstrokes, like the script, san serif, or serif.

Hand lettering allows you to use any pen. With your pen you will be able to draw monoline letters, block letters, elegant flourishes and even imitate brush letterings or real calligraphy. As I told you before you can use any normal pen (fixed width) to start hand lettering. The most handy pen is a simple pencil.

In this tutorial, we will go through four different lettering styles that are foundational for most hand lettering. These four lettering styles can be changed to look both formal and casual. We will be introduced to all four, following which we will be given a simple step-by-step guide that describes how to draw each.
