  1. Too much vitamin D can cause harmful high calcium levels. Tell your doctor right away if any of these signs of high vitamin D/calcium levels occur

    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Constipation
    • Loss of appetite
    • Increased thirst
    • Increased urination
    • Mental/mood changes
    • Unusual tiredness

    A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including

    • Rash
    • Itching/swelling
    • Severe dizziness
    • Trouble breathing

    Other things to note

    • Vitamin D at normal doses usually has no side effects. If you have any unusual effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
    • If your doctor has directed you to take this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

    Precautions

    • Read directions carefully before start of therapy
    • If on bile resins, take drug 2 hours before/after
    • Call MD for constipation, vomiting/pain/drowsiness.
    • For capsule products : Take as directed. Ask RPh if your brand is best taken with food. Check warnings on OTC medications. Discuss with MD your need for calcium and vitamin D.
    • For drops products : Take at the same time(s) daily as directed. Measure dose using a dosing spoon/cup/syringe.
    • For spray, suspension products : Shake well before using. Tell doctor your complete medical history.
    • For tablet, chewable products : Chew medicine completely before swallowing.
    • For tablet, disintegrating products : Place tablet on tongue to dissolve it.
    • For wafer products : Do not swallow whole. Take once weekly unless otherwise directed. Do not take more drug than directed. Review all drugs you are taking with your doctor.

    • For tablet, disintegrating products : Open packaging with dry hands. Dissolve medicine on the tongue or in the mouth.

    Overview
